For the moment, we are in a state of transition, one mod has had to step down, we'll be doing a recruiting of other volunteers as soon as possible. Right now, we don't have the people power to make any changes to current posting procedures. We will, though, very much consider it in the future. As for the specific site Daily Dot, the only suggestion we can offer right now is to click carefully on blog entries - none of the other sites we link to are paid or professional sites in any way to the best of our knowledge. The only other blog we are certain of as a paid site is The Mary Sue. The two most frequent authors we link to from Daily Dot are Aja Romano and Gavia Baker-Whitelaw, though they are by no means the only Daily Dot authors we link to, so for now the only concrete suggestion we can make is to definitely avoid both those writers (you may already be avoiding one of them for other reasons).
We will also add a note to the newsletter about the Daily Dot and The Mary Sue being paid sites as a temporary measure and revisit it when we have a chance to.
