I just found out that Henneth Annun, one of the oldest and influential LotR archives, is closing due to repeated server hacks. There's a lot of metadata that's going to be lost, like themed rec lists, although the stories can probably be saved to AO3 if there are enough volunteers.
I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for - it's a few weeks old - but it involves significant meta issues (maintaining archives and servers, technical challenges of fandom, how to handle fic when authors or archives go away, AO3 consolidaton), and it's an important piece of news for LotR fandom.
