General Fandom
New Rules of Fantasy #3: No Man is an Island: quinn (blog) - ""You need to make a character, so go read these forty pages first" is not very appealing. How then, do we approach culture-first characters?"
Chattiness in the AO3 tags: destinationtoast (tumblr) - "In wrangletangle's post about chatty AO3 tags„ there was a linked AO3 admin post from samjohnssonvt with data about tags (from Oct 2012). Guess what I like to do with data? If you guessed "make brightly colored graphs", you are right. :)"
Untitled: arsenicjade (tumblr) - "H/c isn't a trope. It's a genre."
Meta - A Safe Place - Fandom & Relationships: Caiti (Caitriona_3) (AO3) - "An author's rant after too many instances of people being unnecessarily cruel about people's choice of 'ships."
"I Guess Comics Aren't for Me"--My Own Story of Childhood Gatekeeping and Why Just Making Girl-Friendly Comics Is Not Enough: Katie Schenkel (blog) - "During a random day in sixth grade (so it would be 1996 or 1997), a bunch of boys were looking at a comic binder one of the boys brought from home. I heard one of them mention Black Cat, and I got excited because I knew that character from the Spider-Man cartoon. I zipped over to their desks and asked if I could check it out, and the boy who owned the binder (confused I was even talking to them) pointed to one of the larger pictures. I leaned over to see Black Cat with her costume zipped all the way down. Of course, her cleavage was the stuff of bad Liefeld breasts. I froze because I was embarrassed to see a picture like that at all and also because I realized that the boys were looking at her because they wanted to ogle her, not because they liked the character."
Fiction and Form: Sam Starbuck (blog) - "I rarely encounter fiction written with the diversity of format that occurs in fanfic, and I think my experience in that sense is fairly common."
Steampunk and the Heroine's Journey: Part Two: Mary Sheridan (blog) - "Armed with that understanding, a closer look at the origin of the name "Steampunk", as well as the first novel that was published in the newly-named subgenre, will illustrate that there is an important distinction between Victorian fiction and Steampunk novels."
Theatre Thursdays: Is Race Lifting in Theatre a Lie?: polyglotpisces (blog) - "However, I'm asking the reader to consider: is Broadway seeing its first Black Cinderella, or merely the first Black actress to play Cinderella? What is the distinction and why does it matter?"
Oh, My Pop Culture Religion: Fandom as Religion?: stinekey (blog) - "But then I got to thinking: what are the big differences between participating in a fandom and being a member of a religion?"
How to sell women their own exploitation: Anna Hamilton (blog) - "But Lifetime's over-the-top Twitter promotion of their recent Brittany Murphy biopic that aired on September 6, The Brittany Murphy Story, raises some disturbing and complex questions about the continued exploitation of women in peril and the social media-enabled marketing of exploitation as entertainment."
Using italics for second-language words: sailorptah (DW) - ""What is your opinion about the use of italics for "foreign" words in fiction in general? How do you determine which words to italicize? To what degree it is a stylistic or political choice?""
Just a thought: princessofgeeks (DW) - "Do you think now that Hollywood is more aware of fandom, that is changing their conception of the potential for gay subtext and how they present male characters? And is that in turn changing slash?"
I think communication in the 21st century is becoming one of my themes: dirty_diana (DW) - "Tumblr is currently talking about how fandom should be using the sites that it's currently using in a different way than it's currently using them, for like the millionth time."
Fanfic, canon and headcanon: sholio (DW) - "I don't usually stick to the exact same sequence of events for pre-canon, post-canon, and in-between-canon stuff."
Specific Fandoms
Depression Quest
Too Many Choices: The Hooded Utilitarian (blog) - "I would say that yes, absolutely, Depression Quest is art. It's true that its goals are more social and educational than purely aesthetic — but lots of art works towards social and educational goals (The Jungle; The Handmaid's Tale; James Baldwin's essays, and on and on.) The game works to create empathy and understanding, and to create and examine emotional states. Those are all recognizable aesthetic goals. It's definitely art. The question, though, is whether it's good art."
Disney
Are Disney's Kid Shows More Progressive Than Their Movies?: MarchHareMoe (blog) - "As I found myself watching these shows week to week, I was rather surprised about what kind of decisions the writers and directors made for them. Sometimes these shows covered mature topics, and not always in a subtle way."
Doctor Who
Rubbishy Robots from the Dawn of Time: Doctor Who, "Deep Breath,' and Moffat Fatigue: PlaidAdder (AO3) - "This series premiere is made almost entirely of recycled parts, patched together unconvincingly."
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Nobody Expects the… Straight White Dude?: Disappointment in Dragon Age: Inquisition: Tsunderin (blog) - "These feelings stem not from feelings of entitlement, but from a sense that despite the game's astounding nine romancible characters, this newest installment of the Dragon Age series has taken a step backward for minority representation."
Ghostbusters
Why an all-female 'Ghostbusters III' is the reboot we need: Chris Osterndorf (blog) - "When reports started to emerge that Ghostbusters III, the latest installment in/reboot of the legendary comedy franchise would not only happen, but that it would star a female-driven cast, it felt like a big moment."
Harry Potter
Magical Mondays: Artificial Life in Harry Potter: MadameAce (blog) - "While the magical mechanics of how this works are never actually explained within the narrative, the biggest question I always had while reading the series was this: are the people in the paintings at Hogwarts sentient, or just a magical form of artificial intelligence?"
Some thoughts on Harry Potter as a dystopia.: hellotailor (tumblr) - "I find it impossible to think of Harry Potter as anything BUT a dystopia. Even Hogwarts itself is a dystopia."
Families Of Blood and Families Of Choice:morgynleri (DW) - "For my alternate universe With the Purest Intentions, one of the major elements in my world-building is family. Families of blood, families of choice, and how the two intersect, particularly in the case of the extended Black family."
Ice Castles
How to Cry: On Ice Castles: The Hooded Utilitarian (blog) - "Donald Wrye directed the 1978 version of Ice Castles and he is a middling director by reputation. It doesn't seem to have made much of a difference since Ice Castles is theCasablanca of low brow weepies—a confluence of factors have colluded to make the slightest of material work to the greatest benefit. It is in many ways the perfect "onion.""
James Bond
9 reasons it's time for a black James Bond: Chris Osterndorf (blog) - "After Washington's comments, it's more apparent than ever: there are many reasons why a back James Bond isn't just a good idea, but a great one."
Jeeves & Wooster
Untitled: horriyou (LJ) - "It was discussed that Jeeves would be INTJ as opposed to the suggested ISTJ and that Bertie is an ESFP/ENFP."
Loveless
Sexualized Saturdays: Lovelss and Virginity: Lady Saika (blog) - "Rather, I want to talk about one of the stranger details that mangaka Yun Kouga included in the series: namely, virginity as a visible trait."
Marvel Cinematic Universe
Why we may never get a Black Widow movie: Gavia Baker-Whitelaw (blog) - "At some point during the current geological era, Marvel Studios is going to make a female-led superhero movie. Unfortunately, it seems less and less likely to be about Black Widow."
Does the Marvel Cinematic Universe Play to the Female Gaze?: The Mary Sue (blog) - "When I see these shots of Chris Hemsworth, shirtless, with no context or reason for existing, I have to wonder if that was done on purpose. Is there female gaze in the Marvel films?"
Applying my biology boner to Steve Rogers and the super serum: What this shit might actually have changed: puppysteeb and caladblog: (tumblr) - "Okay, so what we know the serum did: Put on muscle and bone mass. Increased his metabolism by 4, according to the Marvel Guide Book Gave him increased endurance and strength, super healing and increased natural faculties Cured him of all his illnesses"
Things I Am Crotchety About: Rant #2: cesperanza (DW) - "So my last mega-fandom was SGA, and the thing is, I could pretty much go anywhere with SGA, because in a way, the characters were paper thin."
Musing on MCU (well, Steve/Bucky specifically) and AUs: sholio (DW) - "I've kind of noticed in the past that some fandoms (White Collar, SGA) are very easy for me to read/write AUs, while others (Avatar: The Last Airbender is my ur-example of this) are pretty much impossible, or at least very difficult."
A Song of Ice and Fire
Broken (maybe), but not broke: miss-m-calling (tumblr) - House Lannister in the books is rich. Really really really rich. Yet GoT S4 changed that so House Lannister is supposedly skint. What gives??
Untitled: nobodysuspectsthebutterfly, ciscocosta (tumblr) - I've just reread the conversation Jaime has with Rennifer Longwaters, the Chief Undergaoler of the dungeons beneath the Red Keep. And the whole scene just screams "*this* is one of the ways Littlefinger is embezzling from the crown."
Untitled:donewithwoodenteeth (tumblr) - Anonymous said: Do you think Daenarys is right to hate the Starks? I can fully understand the Lannister's(especially Tywin) and even the Baratheon's but should that hate really spread to the Starks?"
Untitled:donewithwoodenteeth (tumblr) - I look at Shae as just selfish. She's not necessarily that bad (like lol this is a series with Ramsay Bolton/Gregor Clegane,) but she's fueled by selfish motivations."
Teen Wolf
In Brightest Day: Teen Wolf's Erica Reyes and Chronic Illness: polyglotpisces (blog) - As you may know by now, Teen Wolf is a show that is near and dear to my heart (i.e. an obsession) and Season 2 introduced the character of Erica Reyes, an epileptic high school student who becomes a werewolf. Despite the fact that lycanthropy acted as a cure for her illness, she still helps paint a picture of some of the issues surrounding those with chronic illness. But how accurate was her portrayal? What was problematic and what was done well?
Untitled: theepiclovestoryofsamanddean (tumblr) - "This is not about another tv program that somehow took Teen Wolf's place, it's about the fact that Teen Wolf did lost his own."
TW412 - Attack of the Bones!: cupidsbower (tumblr) - "That was not a finale. I don't know why they decided to pretend it was."
X-Files
The Redundancy of Monica Reyes (X-Files, "Lord of the Flies"): PlaidAdder (AO3) - ""Lord of the Flies" more or less proves that if you have Scully on the case, you really don't need Reyes. There's nothing that Reyes can do that Scully can't; and there's a lot that Scully can do that Reyes can't."
