Notices
We're now using "?format=light" on all DW and LJ links, and "/mobile" on all tumblrs, does this help or hinder readability?
If you want to give feedback, volunteer, link us to meta or ask a question, comment to the volunteers post, the Questions and Things post, the screened post, or PM/email.
General Fandoms
Dark Fantasy/Grim Dark/Grittiness in Fantasy
Grimmy Grimmy Dark Dark: The G (blog) - "what's the purpose of all the violence and cruelty in the art we consume, and specifically in fantasy fiction? When is it acceptable and when is it not?"
The Value of Grit: Joe Abercrombie (blog) - "I have been observing for some time a certain tendency for people to complain about the level of grit in fantasy books."
On Grittiness & Grimdark: foz meadows (blog) - "What struck me forcefully about Abercrombie’s essay, however, was his failure to acknowledge, let alone address, a key aspect of the debate, viz: the ways in which grittiness is racially, sexually and culturally political, and whether or not those elements can ever be usefully disentangled from anything else the concept has to offer.""
What is Your Consensual Love and Sex doing in My Fantasy kateelliott (LJ) ”However, I want to follow up on the (seemingly endless) discussion of the depiction and frequency of rape and sexual violence (most commonly against women) in gritty realistic grimdark fantasy.”
Fanfic legality/OTW cont.
[OTW/AO3] To the people making offsite rebuttals: sachehund - "Regarding the OTW thing in specific: the fact of the matter is that we don’t have an ongoing dialogue about this, and that’s pretty much necessary when it comes to having an organization that’s meant to advocate for all of us. I don’t remember voting them in, I don’t remember saying I was totally alright with their mission statement, and I frankly don’t like their loopholes."
On the OTW part 3 - The Legality of Fanfiction: meinterrupted (DW) - "Let me state this plainly: Fanfiction is legally protected under US Copyright laws, under the fair use doctrine. The OTW believes this, and is willing to defend this position in court."
Response #3 AO3 meta: kojum (DW) - "Basically: I'm okay with fic existing publically. More than okay, even. But I'm not okay with taking away a creator's legal recourse for dealing with fic if they have a problem with it."
On Fanworks: NK Jemisim (blog) - "my thoughts on the subject are fairly simple. I think fanworks = flattery + free publicity."
Fanhackers
Fanhackers: What?: elf (DW) - "OTW apparently has a new meta-ish something-or-other project, which morphed out of the Symposium. (If I understood that.) Fanhackers is "a directory of informative things about fans," and it's not making sense to me.
Introducing Fanhackers, a directory of informative things about fans: Nele (blog) - "Fanhackers is a place for fans, academics, activists, and anyone else with an interest in info on fans to share and discover new ideas. "
fandom: best vs favourite: tishaturk (DW) - "One of the things I love about fandom is that fandom, for the most part, operates not on a "these are the best things" model (where the criteria for "best" are typically undefined yet implied to be shared by all right-thinking people) but on a "these are my favorite things" model, which can be frustrating but is also wonderfully democratic."
The Kinks masqthephlsphr (LJ) "But there's an additional element to fannishness about fictional books, films, or television shows that also contributes to the potential turbulence of the fan experience: our human response to stories."
Ace Mini Meta Fest: amaresu (DW) - "Mini Meta Fest is open to everyone, but is especially geared towards those of us who want to engage in more informal meta, but need a little kick in the butt to get going and not be overwhelmed by having to produce long, well-thought-out meta.
The Cultural Context of Chinese Fan Culture: An Interview with Xiqing Zheng Part 1: Harry Jenkins (blog) - "some fascinating issues concerning fandom, the global circulation of media, gender and sexuality, fan subs and digital piracy, and issues of cultural, economic, and political change in contemporary China."
Slashreport - 303 writing: Slashreport (podcast) - "how we got started writing, why we keep writing, how we keep from giving up on our writing, and everything in between." With Hapakitsune.
On Fandom Interests, Psychology, Misbehavior, and Patrick Kane: anna_unfolding (DW) - "the more intense my emotions/arousal surrounding a character or trope, the more likely it is connected to something in my inner psychological/emotional life."
The Singularity Already Happened, We Got Corporations: mini.quietbabylon (blog) - "And all I can think is: we already have one of those. It is pretty clear to anyone who’s paying attention that 1. a marketplace regime of firms dedicated to maximizing profit has—broadly speaking—added a lot of value to the world 2. there are a lot of important cases where corporate profit maximization causes harm to humans 3. corporations are—broadly speaking—really good at ensuring that their needs are met."
Richard Neal of Zeus Comics on Boycotting Orson Scott Card's Superman Comic: Chaka Cumberbatch (blog) - “Orson Scott Card has a history of using negative-, or hate-, speech, towards the gay and lesbian community in terms of writing articles and essays, and being an outspoken advocate,” Neal said. “Over the last decade or more, he’s gone from just kind of having one negative opinion [about homosexuality] and moving into this pure on hate speech. It’s to the point where it’s not even something that you can ignore. You’re like, I really can’t support this.”
17 Reasons Geeks Worship Joss Whedon (and 3 Reasons Not to): Aja Romano - "what, apart from directing Avengers, has Whedon—just "Joss" to his massive fanbase—done to deserve such a widespread following? Is he still surfing a ten-year-old wave of love for a show about a girl who kills vampires? Hasn't he only had a string of flops since? Is this just a geek thing?
Comic Issues: Familial Murder: Andrew Ivimey (blog) - "What I think really got in my way as a kid was having living parents – at least that’s what I learned from comics. That, and not having a complete and total lack of respect for the institution of psychological assistance. Those two things are clearly how you start on the path of becoming a badass superhero."
The meta menace: saraht (DW) - "I definitely think it would have been much preferable to wait until mandatory work-types could be implemented before deciding to permit "meta" (i.e., non-fiction) on the AO3."
Searching on AO3: ardinna (DW) - "In the wake of some of the "meta on AO3" discussions that veered off into talking about finding things on the archive, I decided to poke more intently at the search and filter features."
Forms of Fandom: Part 8 and the rest: fandomwanderers (blog) - "In this series, we’ve looked at the varying ways people get involved in and express their fandom. This issue, we’re thinking about a few of the things we’ve missed out."
Diversity and the need for Black Community in Video Games: weber_dubois22 (DW) When I traded correspondence with writer David Brothers last week, I made the argument that video games needs its equivalent to Blazing Saddles. This time, I'm saying that it could use its own version of Milestone Media, the groundbreaking comics company started by a crew of black professionals.
What makes a scene "sexy"? Anonymous (LJ) Brought to you by me reading several original romances that included a bunch of my kinks and yet they were completely boring to me.
When do you feel the age difference is too much? Anonymous (LJ) For people who are into fandoms with teenage or young adult characters, where do you draw the line on feeling attracted to them?
What factors make a fandom hated? Anonymous (LJ) I'm trying to think of what determines whether a fandom will have a bad reputation on the internet (you know the kind, where someone just mentions the name of the fandom and non-fans will start griping about it).
So, fanlore... Anonymous (LJ) I know we're all tired of AO3 wank but apparently I still have enough good will in me to be disappointed that so far the OTW hasn't responded to any of this at all. I get that they are all volunteers, understaffed and incredibly busy etc etc but would a reply along the lines of "we recognize that there is a problem and intend to address it in the next newsletter/meeting/whatever"
Diary Katherine Arcement (blog) - I became an addict when I was 14. But it wasn’t drugs, or booze. I didn’t drop out of school or run away from home; in fact I stayed in. When you are addicted to fan fiction, you don’t need to leave the house to escape.
Artcile About Fanfic curiouswombat (LJ) It is interesting in a number of ways; the writer clearly enjoys reading fic, understands the 'why' of so much of it... But... she is clearly one of the lurkers - not really involved with the feeling of fandom as a community, I think, so there is little sense of that existing.
Specific Fandoms
Star Wars
How Zahn's Heir to the Empire Turned Star Wars into Science Fiction: Ryan Britt (blog) - "the reason Zahn’s first Star Wars novel is so wonderfully odd is that it audaciously asserts Star Wars not as epic space fantasy, but instead, science fiction."
Homestuck
How do you feel about this, Gentlefailers? Anonymous (LJ) Where does this common conception that "matespritship is not the same as human love" come from?
House
House MD: An analysis of chronic pain managed with opiate therapy in entertainment television: Jemma Theivendra (blog) - “House MD: An analysis of chronic pain managed with opiate therapy in entertainment television."
Doctor Who
Teaspoon data and data, math and cooking: eve11 (LJ) - Still churning through the Teaspoon data. I made a graph of number of reviews vs. word count for a set of categories of word count.
Useful primarily to argue with: beccaelizabeth (DW) - "nobody has the time to rewatch all the canon for one essay, so that's fair, but that being the case it seems one should admit it and not try and make a mountain out of a patchwork coat (representing a shattered identity, apparently) or make sweeping statements about an era trying to put women back in their place without citing specific incident."
Dear Critcs: Please use real numbers: beccaelizabeth (DW) - "I keep finding article after article that talks about the Doctor's companions as always being women. Also, specifically, being miniskirt wearing screamers of no particular intellectual distinction or personal agency. Furthermore, they're alleged to be got rid of by 'frequently' marrying them off."
Wonder Woman
Another Character That Kind of has a Fucked up Premise: youngbadmanbrown (tumblr) - "I wanna read about that Wonder Woman, the Year One Wonder Woman who’s like jesus in the temple flipping shit over. I wanna read about the Wonder Woman who’s so appalled by the conditions of man’s world she marches into the UN and tells everyone off. The Wonder Woman who meets a crying girl on a street corner, finds out that her boyfriend just laid hands on her and then goes and cuts off his hands."
Avengers
Once I dug an early grave to find a better land: musesfool (DW) - "Here are some things about (MCU) Steve that I try to keep in mind about him while writing"
The Lord of the Rings
From the Mailbag: The Unbearable Baggage of Orcing: NK Jemisin (blog) - "Think about that. Creatures that look like people, but aren’t really. Kinda-sorta-people, who aren’t worthy of even the most basic moral considerations, like the right to exist. Only way to deal with them is to control them utterly a la slavery, or wipe them all out.
Why the Hobbit Fails: (blog) -Vincent Laforet - ”Mr. Jackson has embraced what might be called theme-park-ride cinema, the default style of commercially anxious, creatively impoverished 3-D moviemaking. The action sequences are exercises in empty, hectic kineticism, with very little sense of peril or surprise. Characters go hurtling down chutes and crumbling mountainsides or else exert themselves in chaotic battles with masses of roaring, rampaging pixels”
Mass Effect
Mass Effect’s Combat - is the way forward the way backward?: md_kiryu (LJ) - This morning I had something of a bizarre epiphany.
Supernatural
It was never really about the POV: mobiusklein (LJ) - What's really going on is that people are angry that Dean tries to maintain his own opinions instead of simply being a mirror for Sam, a mirror that only shows the good shiny parts, a reverse of a fun house mirror which distorts in a mocking sense.
Teen Wolf
Epic Meta Reaction Post with Visual and Film Theory: ladyw1nter (tumblr) - "Actually you know what, I went though that sequence shot-by-shot and I’m now of the pretty firm opinion that they knew exactly what they were doing and that it was designed to make you hate Scott at least a little."
Do you think Scott will grow up enough to be an alpha?: jebiwonkenobi (tumblr) - "I definitely think the show is heading in an Alpha Scott direction. I’m not sure about a two alpha solution - we’ll have to see how the alpha pack swings it."
Women & Issues on Consent in Teen Wolf: A Response: sordidcrayons (tumblr) - "Either Jeff Davis is full of shit when he says that the women lead among hunters (possible) or he’s showing how women who have power in male-centric environments have to adapt to their situation in order to be taken seriously and not tossed on their ass. And that maybe they are given that power, and are only allowed to keep it so that the men have plausible deniability or whatever."
A Game of Thrones
Meta Monday: Warrior Women: justadram (tumblr) - "Today’s topic is the warrior woman, women such as Brienne, who don armor and fight like a man in a culture where men die in the field and women in childbirth. Brienne’s behavior shatters Westerosi gender norms and she is taunted, underestimated, and belittled as a result. Is the warrior woman merely a fantasy trope or were there women like Brienne in medieval Europe?"
The Sentinel
I have a question: giandujakiss (DW) - "But I'd always thought that in the actual Sentinel series, the existence of Sentinels was not generally known. So, is this all fanon? The idea of Sentinels as generally known, Centers to treat them, and so on? Because if so, it's remarkably consistent across fandom fusions."

I don't find the /mobile view for tumblr more readable. The wide text lines are harder for me to read, so I just delete the /mobile anyway. Same with light style. Maybe style=mine?

Thanks for pointing out the html fail, should be fixed now.

I have my layout customized for minimizing whitespace, so the all-whitespace ones are kind of painful.

I see what you mean. I think we may well end up polling after all, but as a workaround, you could add these bookmarklets to your bookmarks bar?

I am indifferent to format=light in most cases. I find it helpful to see journals in their own styles as a memory aid, but like the default readability. I don't mind needing to use style=mine, but prefer format=light for reading other people's work.
I don't have much difficulty just changing the urls myself, though.
