Meta Links (07/03/13 - 13/03/13)

Notices

We're now using "format light" on all DW and LJ links, and /mobile on all tumblrs, does this help or hinder readability? We will be having a poll later on where you can give your opinion.

If you want to give feedback, volunteer, link us to meta or ask a question, comment to the volunteers post, the Questions and Things post, the screened post, or PM/email.

We desperately need mods! If you want the comm to continue, please think of volunteering.

General Fandom

The Universal Versus Smash Porn Company fandom-lawyers (LJ) We've been blogging about it on a new tumblr at fyeahcopyright, and found out this morning that the case has settled!

meta: Violence, Brutality, and Women on TV: alchemise (DW) - "After watching last week's Banshee, it got me thinking about how rare it is to see brutally violent fight scenes featuring women on TV, where the woman is just one of the combatants. That is, scenes where a woman fights brutally, not where it's just one-sided and she's being victimized."
warning: violence, character: female, fandom: banshee

Damsel in Distress (Part 1) Tropes vs Women: Anita Sarkeesian (webseries) - "This video explores how the Damsel in Distress became one of the most widely used gendered cliché in the history of gaming and why the trope has been core to the popularization and development of the medium itself."
topic: gaming, character: female, topic: sexism, trope: damsel in distress

Pitting creators against fandom: Aja Romano (blog) - "Is fan culture entitled or empowered or both at once?"
topic: fandom, topic: fourth wall

AU fic: quiet--tiger(LJ) - "Do you guys find there are general alternate universe/history themes that pop up across fandoms? Obviously there is a broad category of "slavery" fics I've seen, but I mean more specific AU settings"
topic: AU

NPR Best-Of Lists: Playing Favorites?: ladybusiness (DW) - "The inevitable question is: so what? What does it matter if this particular list has fewer female authors than it otherwise might? The list already includes more women than men, no matter how we examine the data. But still, it matters."
topic:gender, topic: media, topic: representation

Coverage of Women on SF/F Blogs (2012): ladybusiness (DW) - "This project is about the visibility of women in science fiction and fantasy reviews and whether the gender of the reviewer impacts that visibility."

Open Thread: Oracle Hotline: mithen (LJ) - Do you generally outline your fics or do you prefer to write spontaneously and then revise?"
topic:writing

Religion and Non-Religion: kaigou (DW) - "It'd be very easy to write a story in which religion (any religion) gets its comeuppance, or gets dissed or shown to be wrong in some way [...]It actually feels harder to write -- believably -- characters who really do cherish, and respect, and feel obligated to fulfill, a set of religious precepts."
topic: writing, topic: religion

I Fought the Book, and the Book Won: merisunshine36 (DW) - "Do our fic reading patterns come from the books we read, or vice versa? Who knows. I suspect it's a bit of both."
topic: fanfic, topic: reading

Present Tense And Me:Isis (DW) - "FRTDNEATJ I've been thinking about why I bounce so hard off so much present-tense fiction. You have probably noticed this about me if you've been reading my reviews, so I thought it might be interesting (at least to me :-) to ramble about it a little."
topic: writing, topic: reading, topic: discussion

Music:Melannen (DW) - "ANYWAY. Along those lines, some years back, somebody (I've no idea who) said that their test for when they're too invested in a fandom is to pick some random songs from their collection, and if they can come up with a pairing (or vid idea) that matches every song, they are exactly the right level of invested. (If you come up with the same pairing for every song, you are probably too invested.)"
fandom: vidding, fandom: fanmix, topic: discussion

No Subject (post on accessibility at a convention):soc_puppet (DW) - "You may remember my post a while back on my efforts to promote accessibility at our local anime convention, AnimeIowa. Well, we're back in convention planning mode now, and while I'm planning to repeat the stuff that worked and implement as many other things as I can possibly think of, I could use a bit of advice from people who may have a bit more experience in this area."
topic: disability, topic: discussion

Ace Mini Meta Fest Prompt Listamaresu (DW) - "Prompts have been compiled and here is the list. "
topic: asexuality, topic: discussion, topic: meta

I think it might be nice if you used the ISO standard for date formatting (YYYY-MM-DD) in the header. The way it's formatted now is hard for me to read (I keep having to consciously remind myself it isn't July!). I recognize that it's commonly used in cultures other than my own, which is why I suggest the international standard rather than my own culture's date format. ♥

I just want you to know that I appreciate what you do for fandom. I like the link aggregation because it allows me to get a feel for what other corners of the huge thing that is fandom are talking about. I don't use tumblr for fandom, so discovering new tumblrs to read is useful; so is the chance to read relevant meta by people who share no fandoms with me, and whom I would not otherwise have met (because we share no fandoms).

The link to "Authors Talk Fanfic and Fandoms" is missing the "l" in html, so it returns an error message.

That aside, I want to add my thanks and delight about the fact that you're rounding up fanfic meta. I've really missed it since Metafandom shut down.

It seems to me you're aggregating from a wide number of blogs and platforms, which is really lovely.

The Music post by melannen should probably have some additional tags, like maybe "music" og "fanmix", as I don't think the discussion had much to do with vidding as such.

It seems that the Person of Interest fandom tag is missing for this entry.

And of course, another big Thank You for doing this, it's a great resource and always interesting to see what people are talking about at the moment.

I think ?style=site is preferable on DW.

Also, LJ has been having intermittent issues with ?format=light not working at all on links. This is something we've noticed while compiling the newsletter I work for, and what I noticed just now following links from your posts.

None of the links in your posts are opening in format=light for me. I just tried them all. I don't actually know for sure as I haven't seen them say anything about it, but I suspect that the new code they're rolling out has basically fuxored that style. It's been working less and less over the past few weeks and I doubt it's going to come back.

Well, that's why I said the problem is intermittent. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. For me the links are opening in normal site style rather than light. LJ has not said anything about it. I don't believe they've removed the function, because in that case it would never work and they would have announced it. I believe that something in their new code is messing up the light format. And since the new code isn't going away, I don't expect the problem to ever be fixed.
