List of Smut Writing Guides: owlcritic (tumblr) - "a list of guides that have been written on how to write smut."
Violence, Virtual Space, and “Serious Games”: Kristin Bezio (blog) - " I want to talk about how games are doing good, rather than just saying that they aren’t bad … or, depending on your perspective, “all bad.” "
Rock, Paper, Shotgun: Dragon Age III’s Gaider On The Impracticality Of Sexism Nathan Grayson: (blog) - "All this talk of sexism isn’t going away, nor should it. The gaming industry’s sick, and the symptoms are plain as day. Mystifyingly often, however, the immediate reaction to even the faintest hint of that suggestion is “No, nuh-uh! You just want to censor expression! Give me one good reason we actually need to change.”"
The Mary Sue: In Which I Am Pretty Darn Sure That Most Gamers Are Fine With Female Protagonists Becky Chambers: (blog) - "I don’t think it’s gamers who have a problem with female protagonists. That disconnect is what’s been bugging me the most about that article, more than all the girls-have-cooties implications."
Lifecycle of a Fandom: Part Two – Transmission: Eleanor Musgrove (blog) - "Well, the most obvious change in a fandom when that first bit of canon is transmitted is that there’s suddenly a lot more to work with. "
Not Seeing Forest for the Trees - When Characters Become More Important to Fans than Story: shadowkat67 (LJ) - "a) Turning Fictional Characters into Icons for a Social Cause and what happens when the story and/or writer either has the characters betray that cause or die. b) Character Deaths, or more specifically controversial character deaths which the fandom took personally or as a personal affront."
Why Steven Moffat Rules Tumblr Fandom: hellotailor (tumblr) - "If Joss Whedon is king of the nerds, then Steven Moffat is fandom’s evil overlord. He may not be a household name in the U.S. (yet), but in the world of Tumblr, things are a little different."
Maping Creative Influence: bookviewcafe (blog) - "How much of our concept of good—by which I mean entertaining— literature in particular (leaving out music and film) so shaped us that certain expectations are invisible?"
On Gatekeeping Renay from Lady Business: (blog) - "This experience made me wonder: how many other titles would I have fallen in love with like that if my access to science fiction and fantasy had been more robust? How often did I get derailed from genre when so often faced with male authors whose books just sounded boring because I wasn’t yet at that reading level, and had no one to introduce me to easier or more accessible work aligned with my interests? I had no other genre fans around me to direct me to female authors."
Specific Fandoms
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Talking About Spike : kikimay (LJ) - "You know that I'm disappointed by the last issue of Angel&Faith. I dislike that portrayal of Spike not because he had sex with another woman (Still, it's Harmony that we're talking about and he treated her so badly! The girl - yes, evil soulless vamp, whatever - deserves some respect!) but because they want us to buy that Spike."
Dr. Who
St. John's Pokers and Tongs: janie_aire in metatardis (LJ) - An analysis on historical imagery and relationship with Clara in the prequel to 'The Bells of St. John'
The Guardian: Why Doctor Who needs more female writers Mathilda Gregory: (blog) - "The new season of Doctor Who, starting Saturday, doesn't use a single female writer. The count is similarly poor for other British science-fiction and fantasy shows – so what's the problem?"
Harry Potter
Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets: Gilderoy Lockhart is a Predator: professortennant (tumblr) - "So, we all know that Lockhart is a narcissistic phony. But, upon my 2nd reading, there is some weird ass interaction between him and Harry, especially."
Draco Malfoy - A Character Study: hpdarkarts_mod (LJ) - "We conclude our Malfoy character study series with Draco Malfoy - one of fandom's favourite characters, loathed by some and loved by others."
Legend of the Seeker
A Respected Mord'Sith: vorquellyn (LJ) - "The ways in which I think Richard, Kahlan, and Zedd misunderstand Cara’s connection to them."
Man From UNCLE
Rule63: kleenexwoman(LJ) - "Now, I'm wondering: What do you think a genderswapped, always-a-girl version of Napoleon would be like? What about Illya? "
Othello (Shakespeare)
Can We Talk About Emilia for a Second?: shutuphamlet (tumblr) - Emilia is a great character who’s as much a victim as Desdemona, and she has far more depth and greatness in her than most characters equal to her in size."
Sherlock (BBC)
Sherlock, Mycroft, and Mummy: wellingtonboots (LJ) - "I use the development maturation model to explain why and how the Holmes brothers developed their unique approach to emotions."
Teen Wolf
I Have a Lot of (Mostly Negative) Feelings about Pack Mom Stiles: beenwandering (tumblr) - "[The pack] might appreciate having someone to shoulder responsibility for them, but that person should be an adult in their life, not a peer. Stiles is 16, he’s the same age as them."
Sterek: A Path Filled With Possibilities: fanaddict (AO3) - "[A] character study of Stiles and Derek, what made them who they are, and what that implies about how they interact ... subtext … the various business factors that make Teen Wolf unique in television, which allows it to be one of the few current TV shows that could actually have a fanon to canon couple happen."
Tolkien
Music in Middle-Earth Gene Hargrove: (blog) - "The lack of metrical form and the presence of the caesurae pose special problems in trying to write or reconstruct authentic music for Middle-earth."
Was Frodo Baggins One of "The Wise"?: dreamflower02 (LJ) - "First of all, who are 'the Wise' in Middle-earth, and what traits cause them to be called by this term?"
Comics: Batman
Book Club: A Geek Feminist bounces off Batgirl Volume 1: The Darkest Reflection yatima: (blog) - "I’ll be the first to admit that my taste in superheroism runs to the ultra-problematized, not to say outright subversive: I prefer Faith to Buffy, Grant Morrison’s Crazy Jane to Alan Moore’s Silk Spectre, Tony Stark to Bruce Wayne. "
Supernatural
Come wonder with me...all about Crowley!!!! : etoile444 (LJ) - "Perhaps the joy of watching Crowley comes from the fact that he has always been somewhat of an enigma, and it’s never really easy to figure out who he is or his motivations."
SAM SUBCHESTER: A PERSUASIVE ESSAY: fitzgeraldme (tumblr) - "overall, as a dyed in the wool Samgirl, this essay bothers me on the level that Sam’s character and character arc to me has always been one of independence;"
Les Miserables

House of Lords: A Treatise Wherein it is Proven that Javert wants to Nom Valjean: axmxz (tumblr) - "Javert is in pain because Valjean was good to him and he realizes he wants to be good to him as well, because he feels a deeply horrifying admiration for him, he is beginning to revere him almost."
Comics: X-Men
Avengers Assimilate: Identity Politics in 'Uncanny Avengers': Andrew Wheeler (blog) - "All of which is admirable, but that's not actually the speech Havok gave. Havok's speech makes a huge leap from, "my minority identity doesn't define me" to a rejection of minority identity. Havok is a mutant, but he says the word is divisive and that it represents everything he hates. He asks people not to use it. He is, definitively and explicitly, self-loathing about his identity."
The Walking Dead
Faith and the Finale (WD "Welcome To the Tombs" thoughts): the rogues gambit (LJ) - "Discusses the whole episode, but mainly about Andrea's character arc this season.Alright, so judging by the general fan-reactions I've seen throughout the season, I can only imagine the explosion of morbid cheers last night "
Homestuck
Eridan Meta: Farla (AO3) - "I started to consider Eridan's character and to what degree the fanfic versions are built off canon. Eridan has few pesterlogs and was never a major character, so it's actually quite easy to reread his appearances."

Date: 2013-04-10 07:31 am (UTC)I was wondering how you find your meta. Where do you typically look?
no subject
Date: 2013-04-10 08:02 pm (UTC)We have the metanewsmods flists on LJ and DW. We're also subscribed to a number of blogs via RSS. We check the 'meta' tag on pinboard weekly, and we keep an eye on a small number of blogs that don't have RSS, and tumblrs. Last we often get submissions of meta people have either made or read.
I think that's about it! We try to keep the net wide so as to get a good range of meta.
