General Fandom

Unpacking the unofficial fanfiction census: Gavia Baker-Whitelaw (blog) - "There’s a reason why fanfic site Archive of Our Own was on Time’s 50 Best Websites of 2013. AO3 is popular, it’s easy to use, and it was created by people who know about fanfic. And so, as Tumblr user destinationtoast realized, its meticulous tagging system provides enough information to compile a kind of unofficial fanfic census. "
topic: AO3, topic: fanfic

Fandom As Detachable: Eleanor Musgrove (blog) - "It’s a surprisingly common occurrence. One moment, you’re absolutely head-over-heels in love with a show, and the next minute you realise you have nothing in common with anyone else who loves it. "
topic: fandom

All Tomorrow’s Zombies chiusse: (blog) - "The subcultural shorthand of the modern zombie movie, which has by now staggered, powered only by a brain stem, into our collective consciousness, implies (and this would actually do for a third answer) a story of the apocalypse that must be about being somewhere dangerous, and getting somewhere safe (or dying in the attempt, more often than not). "
topic: zombies

An Open Letter to Fangirls About AnglophiliaVivian Obarski - The Learned Fangirl: (blog) - "I just get this sense that with people with severe cases of anglophilia, it’s similar to people who love Mad Men and wish that they could live in the cool mod elegance of the 1960’s. What they’re looking for is an idealized notion of a simpler, or (on the surface) more civilized, posh or refined place that just doesn’t exist. It’s all illusions based on idealized notions."
topic: appropriation

David Karp breaks silence about Tumblr's content purge Gavia Baker-Whitelaw - Daily Dot: (blog) - "The restrictions, which led to an estimated 12 million blogs vanishing from public tag searches, were intended to make the site more family-friendly—a puzzling decision, since Tumblr is 10 percent porn and contains unknown numbers of other adult-rated blogs. Needless to say, Tumblr users were not pleased. In fact, many of them began to jump ship as soon as they heard about the new content rules. A LiveJournal-style mass exodus seemed likely. "

What We Aren’t Talking About When We Talk About Inclusion and Representation, And What We Are Becky Chambers - The Mary Sue: (blog) - "Identifying overarching trends in storytelling — such as the imbalance of female and male protagonists — does not mean individual stories are necessarily bad or wrong for following those trends. The mere existence of a trope does not condemn the work in which it exists."
fandom: RPGs, topic: gender

Writerly Ways: cornerofmadness(LJ) - "Romance. While I’m not a huge romance writer, it is, by nature, in at least some of my work. However, what I do not now, nor have I ever understood the appeal of the alpha male dickhead hero. "
topic: romance

worldbuilding top to bottom: kate elliott(LJ) - "Many months ago on Twitter I asked people what world building questions they had that they would like me to answer. Several of the questions seemed to me to fall into a set that was more about the mechanics of how to organize and approach world building and less about specific world building choices"
topic: writing, topic: worldbuilding

Specific Fandoms

A Song of Ice and Fire

Hollow Crowns and Deadly Thrones Part IV: Steven Attewell(blog) - "Steve began with a five-piece analysis of the Hands of the King. Now he turns his attention to the Iron Throne. In Part IV: Two Brothers, Two Visions of Monarchy, Steve discusses the two brothers who clash directly not just over who should be king, but also to what it means to be king."
fandom: asoiaf

Secrets and Lies: Sins of the Father:ghostlovesinger (blog) - "My goal with this series of essays is to explore some of the questions left us by the latest book in the series, A Dance with Dragons, with some crossover into its companion novel, A Feast for Crows."
fandom: asoiaf, warning: spoilers

DC Cinematic Universe

Interstellar Extradition, Part I: The Man of Snow Ben Adams - Overthinking It: (blog) - "So what are the US’s legal obligations under international law? What are Superman’s legal strategies? There are essentially three related inquiries: First, what is the legal status of Zod’s request? Second, what is Kal-El’s legal status in the United States? And lastly, given the answer to those two questions, is extradition permitted?"
fandom: DCCU, character: Superman, topic: law

Even DC President Diane Nelson Thinks Wonder Woman is “Tricky” Susana Polo - The Mary Sue: (blog) - "Here’s the thing: Sandman is an incredible story, a great comic, and one that has been the gateway into comics for legions of female comics fans because of its many, many, central female characters who were painted with just as much concern and thought as its male ones. But The Sandman absolutely does not have a “single, clear… story.” ... Oh, and there’s one other thing: nobody outside of the comics world knows who Sandman is, and Wonder Woman has been an American icon for more than seventy years.."
fandom: DCCU, character: wonder woman

Game of Thrones

Meta Monday: Growing Up Noble(woman): justadram (tumblr) - "Last week we looked at the education of noble sons in Westeros, who receive on the whole a well-rounded if brief education, and the education of noble sons in Western Europe during the Middle Ages, which was less well-rounded, but a more focused and lengthy affair. Today we will look at their other halves—the noblewomen of Westeros and medieval Europe. Is the education that noble daughters receive in Westeros comparable to what a medieval lady might have received?"
fandom: game of thrones

Pacific Rim

The Visual Intelligence of Pacific Rim: Sam Keeper (blog) - "When confronted with a text that primarily relies on images, therefore, our response is to write that text off as dumb or lacking depth, because we're interpreting the text on a linguistic level rather than on the level that it's working."
fandom: pacific rim

Sherlock BBC

Explaining Watson’s Medical Discharg: wellington goose(LJ) - "I explore the reasons why John Watson was discharge from the army. I also explain the discharge process and calculate John Watson’s army pension from his CV"
fandom: sherlock (bbc), topic: character

Teen Wolf

Everything’s A Joke To Me: Kohlberg’s Scale and Where Kate Argent Falls: lehayed (tumblr) - "Most understand what a morally “grey" or “black and white" character is. It’s how complicated or simple the good and bad of their actions are and relates to how they view the world and judge the actions of others. This can make or break a character-make them interesting or boring, depending on who you are and what you like. Kohlberg put morals onto a sliding scale, with 1 being the lowest (think criminals, young children, and animals) and 6 being the highest ( think Jesus, Martin Luther King Jr., and Ghandi). For context, most normal functioning adults are stage 3 or 4. This, however, is Teen Wolf, where morals are loose or locked tight depending on the character. In this meta we’ll be exploring Kate Argent, the woman everyone loves to hate, and where she fits on this scale."
fandom: teen wolf

Scott and youthful arrogance: athernadark (tumblr) - "Scott needs a crucible, he needs to learn that sometimes when the shit hits the fan people get hurt and he is responsible, that sometimes in order for good to succeed bad things have to happen."
fandom: teen wolf

Xena

On Xena and a Lack of Female Villains Tamar Altebarmakian - The Mary Sue: (blog) - "To clarify, I would classify a big-bad as a villain who is a formidable opponent to the protagonist—someone who could match her at every turn, and, occasionally, overpower and outsmart her. A big-bad should also have a large role, either throughout a season arc or within the show’s entire run. She should not play second string to anyone, though she can be involved in another villain’s evil plot. Ultimately, she should have her own goals."

Great link collection, as usual! You seem to have more fandom-specific meta as a proportion of the total right now than you did before. Is that deliberate, or just chance?

I know you follow justadram; do you also follow the meta-aggregation tumblr asoiafuniversity? I found that via allies-person, another good tumblr for multifandom meta (Hunger Games, Harry Potter, etc.).

Huh, that would mean even more fandom-specific links.

You could also follow atla-annotated, selfdeterminedsymbionts (possibly low signal:noise ratio there), fandomsandfeminism (multifandom and fandom-nonspecific posts sometimes, but not all of them are long enough to link here), and language-escapes (if you don't mind the high activity and squee interspersed with meta).
